The Highland Park 40 Year Old (2016 Release) represents a fascinating chapter in the distillery's history. While the inaugural 2008 release relied heavily on refill casks to prevent over-oaking, the 2016 release shifted strategies under Master Distiller Gordon Motion, leaning into a higher proportion of first-fill sherry oak and a different alcohol strength.

It opens with heavy notes of bitter Seville orange marmalade, black cherry syrup, and dark Oloroso sherry. Behind the fruit sits an unmistakable antique shop character—polished dunnage oak, fresh car leather, tobacco leaves, and a faint hint of dried lavender and heathery peat smoke.

Lingering notes of dark espresso, orange oil, and soot from a cold campfire are wrapped in a distinctively herbal, warming oak finish.
